Sunday School

The Orthodox Church lays great emphasis and importance in educating children with the values of Christian life, the contents of the Bible and the Church history. The Sunday School Samajam started functioning in 1931 with the appointment of Puthencavu Geevarghese Mar Philoxenos as its President and Rev. Fr. K David as the General Secretary. On 15th October 1964 it was rejuvenated to receive its present form as Orthodox Sunday School Association of the East (OSSAE). This spiritual organization is functioning in all the parishes of the Church throughout the world. It takes care of the spiritual nurturing of the children by bringing them up in the knowledge and fellowship of Jesus Christ and His Church. The classes are conducted in Malayalam for the children in Kerala and for others in English. It has a separate wing for the outer Kerala region. The classes range from Pre-primary to the 12th class. As in secular schools, class ten concludes the secondary level and a certificate is awarded to the successful candidates. Higher Secondary Course is for another two years.

It was in the 80's that we started the Sunday School with one teacher, our senior Member Mr. T. George and a handful of children, when we didn't even had our own place of worship. Still, we accomplished our mission with a vision to train up a child in the way he should go, so that when he is old he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6).

By the grace of Lord Almighty, in a short span of time our Sunday School made a steadfast growth with having more children and teachers. Gradually, we started participating in Sunday School competitions and started getting recognition by our children winning laurels. Being a small unit, in those days, to compete with other churches was a herculean task.

When we look back, we feel very proud with the steady progress that our Sunday school has made and, continuing with it. We feel proud that two of our children have become priests - Rev. Fr. Jacob Anish Varghese and Rev.Fr. Basil Kuriakose - rendering their services in Mumbai Diocese. One of our Headmasters and the current Malad District Sunday School Inspector Mr. T. P. Paulose has been recognised by the Mumbai Diocese for his 40 years of teaching career.

From nothing, today we have a strength of 56 children and 11 teachers. Our children do participate in District, Diocesan and Inter Diocesan level competitions. We have the following Sunday school activities to its credit:

  • Regularly conduct OVBS
  • Participate in charitable activities by visiting charitable institutions and
  • House to house, carols visit proclaiming the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
